The audience

The Stargazer’s Dome is for guests who have driven hours to escape light pollution. Amateur astronomers with their own gear, families with a kid who got a telescope for Christmas and outgrew the suburbs, photographers chasing the Milky Way, the couple who came for a meteor shower they read about in October. They know what a Bortle scale rating is. They check the moon phase before they book. They book new-moon weekends six months in advance and pay full rate to do it.

These guests do not want a swimming pool, a hot tub, or a noisy bar two blocks down. They want a yard that does not face a streetlight. They want the host to have already done the work of identifying when the sky is darkest, what is rising tonight, where to point. They are quiet guests. They do not party. They go to bed at 2am, wake up at 10am, and review with one paragraph about the Andromeda Galaxy.

The sensory anchor

The cold of the night air hits you when you open the door, even in summer. Indoors, the lights are switchable to red, or there is a red-LED headlamp on a hook by the door. The kitchen runs in dim warm light at night because anything brighter ruins night vision for forty minutes. The silence is the silence of dark-sky country, a real silence, with the small sound of wind in trees and nothing else. From the back door you can see the Milky Way, in season, without walking ten steps.

A mid-range refractor telescope (Celestron NexStar 5SE or equivalent) on a sturdy tripod, kept indoors during the day and rolled out at dusk by the guest. A printed seasonal star chart on the kitchen wall, dated for the current month, with three objects circled by the host. A red-LED headlamp on a hook for every adult guest (count the listing capacity, plus one). The headline is not the telescope alone. It is the combination of a usable scope, a curated chart, and a yard the host has already pre-cleared of trees and outdoor lights.

Secondary amenities

A reclining lawn chair or chaise outside, positioned facing the southern sky in the northern hemisphere (north if you are below the equator). Inside, by the door: a thermos of hot cocoa already made on cold nights, plus a wool blanket. The welcome ritual

You check the weather and the night sky for the guest’s first night. You print a sky map for that night, you circle three objects (a planet, a constellation, a deep-sky object you know is visible from the back porch), and you leave the printout on the kitchen counter with a small note: “Saturn rises at 9:30pm tonight in the southeast. The red headlamp is by the door. The telescope is in the closet.” The first night of the stay is now planned, and the guest has not opened an app. The minimum-viable-welcome wins again [welcome-experience-design].
